Course Description

Upstream Oil & Gas is the original “Oil & Gas 101” course.

Fossil-based fuels run 21st century economies. Though science has made great progress in developing renewable forms of energy, oil & gas will drive the global economy for the foreseeable future. Hydrocarbons are readily available and recoverable because of ongoing technological innovations, it appears.  In fact, a few years ago, industry experts predicted oil would never again reach $100/barrel. But as recently as spring 2022, crude prices spiked over $100, remaining high over the summer.  Gasoline jumped to more than $2/litre in many parts of Canada, and natural gas prices spiked, too.  But in spring 2024, oil has reached $80 after a slow, year-long climb from $70; natural gas prices have dropped and remained low. This indicates ample hydrocarbon supply with low demand (doesn’t it?).   Are there other factors besides supply & demand involved in prices?  Could more price shocks be on their way?

The Oak Leaf Energy Training Upstream Oil & Gas course focuses on hydrocarbon production, which continues in Canada no matter the price.  This includes exploration, drilling, well completion & continued operation of oil & gas extraction facilities.  We consider processes & technologies, players & plays, costs & profits, risks & rewards involved in exploration & production (E&P).  The course examines specifically conventional & unconventional upstream oil & gas in North America. However, we also consider the global context.  We draw some conclusions on the future of hydrocarbon production based on supply/demand, technological advances, economically available reserves, policy (including net-zero), geopolitics and other considerations.

Bruce Peachey is your instructor, an expert with forty-five years’ experience in the Canadian upstream.  Bruce possesses exceptional engineering and R&D expertise, but he has also worked in the classroom for years, teaching upstream fundamentals to university students & Oak Leaf clients.  Bruce is friendly, approachable, enjoys interacting with class participants & welcomes both questions & debate. After two days with Bruce, you will significantly increase your knowledge of the upstream sector. And this can only result in added value to your organization & your role.
