Renewables Course Description

Renewable energy today is all about technical innovation. Policy & markets have driven much of this innovation — renewables such as solar & wind have seen their capital costs drop dramatically in recent years, becoming increasingly cost-competitive with fossil fuels. According to BP, the place of renewable energy (excluding hydro) in the energy mix of nations has moved steadily upward from 1.3% of global energy production in 2010 to beyond 5% today.

Climate change is on everyone’s mind & renewables will have a major role to play if greenhouse gas mitigation efforts are to succeed. The US has decided to re-engage & be bound by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change & other major nations such as China, Germany & France continue to stay the course.  Following through on Canada’s net-zero goals will require dramatic change in the way this nation utilizes energy — a shift away from hydrocarbons toward renewables. The Working Group II contribution to the IPCC 6th Assessment Report drives home the point that climate change is an ever-increasing problem, so finding workable ways to implement those big plans is a growing concern.

This 2-day Oak Leaf course will provide you with high-level information about wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, hydro & carbon capture & storage options. The course also considers the controversial topic of big & small nuclear energy because of nuclear’s potential to create large amounts of low-GHG energy. You will learn how renewables work, where they can be deployed most effectively & the most promising renewable technologies under development. You will also gain understanding of the economics of renewables, policy directions & how renewables will integrate with smart grids. Global renewable efforts are discussed throughout the course, but the primary focus will be on Canadian innovation & projects.

This renewable energy course is an information-packed 2-day session with plenty of group discussion, videos & hands-on activities. The course is of use to people in organizations embracing renewables and/or to folks considering their career options in a future-oriented industry.
