Oak Leaf, North America’s relevant, independent, and objective voice in energy research and training, keeps a close eye on the fast-changing Electricity Industry. Our updated and current Electricity course is a comprehensive 2-day seminar, presented by industry veterans Marcel Chorel and Don White. The course gives the details about this vibrant industry; Marcel and Don provide the perspective of their long and varied careers spent in Electricity.

The first day of the course centres on electricity fundamentals. The assumption is that participants have no prior knowledge of the industry or the basics of how electricity works. You will figure out things like the difference between a kW and a kWh and other concepts you always wanted to know but perhaps were too afraid to ask! Then you will learn the basics of generation, transmission, and distribution. There are also sections on pricing and rates, wind energy, and electricity and the environment. By the end of this day, you will be familiar with how electricity works, how the power is bought and sold, and the latest technological advances in electricity.

On the second day, you will learn about how the electricity industry has been structured and restructured over the past 30 years or so. Getting to grips with the structure is central to understanding the intricate details of how electricity is bought, sold and regulated. Not many years ago, almost all jurisdictions in the world ran their electricity systems as vertically-integrated utilities. But that has changed dramatically, and even within Canada, the electricity industry differs from province to province. By the end of this day, you will understand wholesale market operations, retail market operations, market governance, and how these functions vary in each province.

Courses held in Calgary and Edmonton will reflect the Alberta electricity system; Vancouver courses will focus on the BC system; courses in Toronto will emphasize the Ontario system. In-house courses will be tailored to reflect the particular jurisdiction where the course is held.
